You’re Trying to Move Forward, but Something Still Hurts

Grief isn’t always about losing someone to a death. Sometimes it’s the end of a relationship, the loss of trust after betrayal, a change in your health, or letting go of a future you thought you would have. You might also be grieving experiences you never had, relationships that have changed, or parts of yourself you have lost along the way. Grief can affect how you feel, how you relate to others, how you see the world and how you imagine your future.

You might not even realize you’re grieving. You just know that something has changed, something hurts, and you don’t feel quite like yourself anymore. You might be going through the motions of everyday life while privately struggling with a loss that has changed how you see yourself, your relationships, and your future.

Perhaps you’ve been told that time heals everything, that you need to be strong, or that it’s time to move on. Maybe you thought that, with time, the hurt would fade. But here you are, months or even years later, still carrying the weight of what happened. You may wonder why it still hurts so much, or feel like you should be further along by now.

You might recognize some of these experiences:

  • You can’t seem to move past what happened. You keep replaying events, searching for answers, or wondering what you could have done differently.
  • You’re grieving a relationship or the life you thought you would have. Separation, divorce, relationship endings, or betrayal may leave you struggling with loneliness, anger, regret, or a changed sense of identity.
  • You’re mourning the childhood you never had. Perhaps you grew up without the safety, stability, affection, or support you needed. As an adult, you may be coming to terms with what was missing and how those experiences continue to affect you.
  • You’ve lost relationships that once mattered deeply. Friendships may have faded, people may have drifted away, or changing circumstances may have left you feeling disconnected from people who were once an important part of your life.
  • You’ve lost your sense of trust or safety. After an abusive relationship or other harmful experience, you may find it difficult to trust others, feel secure, or recognize yourself in the person you’ve become.
  • You’re grieving a significant change in your life. Job loss, changes in health, disability, or the loss of an important role or sense of purpose can leave you questioning who you are and what comes next.
  • You’re facing a loss that other people don’t fully understand. You may be grieving something that others don’t recognize as a significant loss or understand why it hurts so much. When others minimize your pain or expect you to move on, you may feel alone in your grief or question whether you have a right to feel the way you do.
  • You’re living with uncertainty or anticipating a loss. You may be struggling with a situation that has no clear ending or preparing yourself for a loss that hasn’t happened yet. Living with uncertainty or knowing a loss may be coming can leave you feeling anxious, helpless, or emotionally exhausted, and unsure how to prepare for what lies ahead.

You don’t have to wait until your grief becomes overwhelming to seek support. And you don’t have to prove that your loss is significant enough to deserve help.

Your grief matters, even when other people don’t fully understand it.

How Therapy Can Help

Grief Counselling That Meets You Where You Are

Grief doesn’t follow a predictable timeline, and there is no single right way to experience loss. Grief counselling provides a supportive space to explore what has happened, understand your emotions, and begin adjusting to life after a difficult change.

At Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy, Heidi Klett, MSW RSW specializes in working with adults experiencing many forms of grief and loss, including:

  • Bereavement counselling: Support following the death of a partner, family member, friend, or another important person in your life.
  • Grief after separation and divorce: Help navigating relationship endings, changes in family life, and the loss of shared plans or an expected future.
  • Grief following betrayal or an abusive relationship: Space to process the loss of trust, emotional security, and your sense of safety, while working toward rebuilding confidence and connection at your own pace.
  • Grieving the childhood you never had: Support in acknowledging unmet childhood needs, the care or protection you deserved, and the impact of experiences that continue to affect you as an adult.
  • Friendship loss and changing relationships: Help processing friendships that have faded, relationships that have ended, or the loneliness that can accompany changing social connections.
  • Job loss and loss of identity: Support when losing employment, a professional role, or a sense of purpose affects your confidence, stability, or plans for the future.
  • Pet loss: Recognition and support for the profound bond you shared with an animal companion.
  • Disability and terminal illness: Support with changes in identity, independence, health, relationships, and the future you imagined.
  • Anticipatory grief: Help navigating the emotions that arise when you expect a significant loss, particularly when someone you love is seriously ill.
  • Disenfranchised grief: A space to process losses that others may minimize, misunderstand, or fail to acknowledge.
  • Ambiguous loss: Support when a loss is uncertain, unresolved, or difficult to define, leaving you without a clear sense of closure.

Depending on your needs, your therapy may focus on:

  • Making sense of your emotions: Explore the sadness, anger, guilt, regret, or other feelings connected to your loss without judging yourself for having them.
  • Working through unresolved feelings: Understand what remains painful, including unanswered questions, unfinished conversations, or things you wish had been different.
  • Recognizing and challenging unhelpful patterns: Explore self-blame, rumination, or expectations about how you should be grieving.
  • Adjusting to life after loss: Develop ways to navigate changes in your relationships, routines, identity, and sense of purpose.
  • Reconnecting with yourself: Identify your strengths, values, and sources of meaning as you discover what moving forward might look like.

Heidi Klett, MSW RSW is a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist offering bereavement counselling, online grief therapy and grief counselling in Ontario. She uses specialized, effective and evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Somatic Practices and strengths-based approaches.

When you work with Heidi Klett, MSW, RSW, therapy is collaborative, non-judgmental, and tailored to your experiences, needs, and goals. Working with a therapist who specializes in grief means having more than someone to talk to. It means having a therapist who understands the complexities of loss, why grief can continue to hurt long after a loss occurs, and how it can affect your sense of self, your relationships, and your sense of safety in the world.

You won’t be told how you should feel, how long you should grieve, or when it’s time to move on. Healing from grief does not mean forgetting what you’ve lost. It means finding a way to carry that experience while making room for life, connection, and meaning again.

What to Expect

Your Loss Matters, and So Does Your Healing

Finding the right support shouldn’t mean travelling long distances or trying to fit appointments into an already difficult time.

As a virtual therapist, Heidi Klett, MSW RSW offers online grief therapy for adults across Ontario, allowing you to access support from the privacy and comfort of your own space.

Whether you’re looking for a therapist in Woodstock, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge, Hamilton, Toronto or another Ontario community, online therapy at Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy offers a convenient way to work through grief and difficult losses.

1. Book a Free Consultation

We’ll talk about what you’re experiencing, what’s been difficult, and what you’re hoping to find support with. Whether you’re grieving a death, a relationship, a loss of trust, your health, or a future you imagined, you don’t need to have the right words or know where to begin. We’ll explore whether working together feels like a good fit.

2. Review Your Benefits Coverage

If you need help understanding your benefits, we can review your coverage options together. As a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, Heidi’s services are covered by most workplace benefits plans. Heidi is also an approved provider under the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program, which provides eligible First Nations and Inuit clients with access to mental health counselling benefits. We’ll help clarify your options so you can better understand the support available to you.

3. Begin With Your First Session

We’ll explore how your loss is affecting you emotionally, mentally, and in your everyday life. You may be struggling to accept what happened, feeling overwhelmed by emotions, questioning yourself, or finding it difficult to imagine what comes next. We’ll make space for your experiences without judgment, at a pace that feels comfortable for you. You won’t be expected to share everything at once or navigate your grief on your own.

4. Find Your Way Forward Together

Ongoing sessions provide space to process your grief and loss, develop ways of coping, and work toward goals that matter to you. We’ll regularly review your progress and adapt our approach as needed.

5. Work Toward Meaningful Change

Together, we’ll work to help you make sense of your loss, understand your emotions, and develop ways to cope with the challenges you’re facing. Depending on your needs, this may include working through difficult feelings, adjusting to changes in your relationships or identity, managing anxiety and uncertainty, or finding ways to reconnect with what matters to you. There is no single timeline for grief, and our work will reflect your experiences, needs, and goals. The aim isn’t to forget your loss or force yourself to move on, but to help you find a way to carry it while gradually making room for connection, meaning, and life moving forward.
