Healing from Childhood Trauma and Intimate Partner Abuse
Maybe what happened to you happened years ago. You’ve moved forward. You’ve built a life. You’ve learned how to cope. But something still doesn’t feel right. You may find yourself constantly on guard, struggling to trust people, reacting more strongly than you’d like, having difficulty setting boundaries or feeling disconnected from yourself. You may understand that you’re safe now, but your body and mind don’t always seem to believe it. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I still affected by something that happened so long ago?”, trauma therapy can help you understand why.
Whether you experienced something deeply distressing or grew up in an environment that left you feeling hurt, unsafe, or unworthy, it can continue to affect how you see yourself, how you relate to others, and how safe you feel in the world. You may understand that what happened wasn’t your fault, yet still struggle with trust, self-doubt, anger, painful relationship patterns, or feeling on edge.
At Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy, you’ll find compassionate, specialized trauma therapy to help you understand how past experiences affect your life today, rebuild your self-esteem and self-trust, break free from painful patterns, reconnect with yourself, and develop healthier, more fulfilling relationships with others.
Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy provides specialized and effective trauma therapy, covered by benefits, for adults across Ontario including Woodstock, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge, Hamilton, Toronto and surrounding communities.
When Past Trauma Continues to Affect Your Life
Trauma can affect more than you realize. Experiences such as childhood abuse, emotional neglect, or unhealthy and abusive relationships can shape how you see yourself, how much you trust yourself, and whether you feel safe letting others get close. Over time, you may struggle with low self-worth, doubt your decisions, lose touch with who you are, or find yourself repeating painful patterns in relationships without fully understanding why. Even if traumatic experiences happened years ago, they may still be affecting how you feel, think, and relate to others today, often in ways you may not recognize or understand.
Trauma experienced during childhood can interrupt the natural development of self-esteem, self-worth, self-trust, and healthy boundaries. During our early years, we learn how to understand ourselves, recognize our needs, our feelings, build relationships, and develop a sense of safety in the world around us. When these experiences are shaped by abuse, neglect, or other painful circumstances, you may grow up questioning your worth, struggling to trust yourself or others, or finding it difficult to recognize and communicate your needs. Trauma therapy can help you understand how these early experiences have affected you and begin to rebuild the sense of self, confidence, and security you may not have had the opportunity to develop.
Trauma can also shape the way you connect with others and influence the attachment patterns that develop in your intimate relationships. You may find yourself fearing rejection or abandonment, struggling to trust others, pushing people away when they get close, or feeling anxious about where you stand with someone you care about. These patterns often develop as ways of protecting yourself from further hurt, but they can make it difficult to build the safe, trusting, and fulfilling relationships you want.
What can unresolved trauma look like? Unresolved trauma doesn’t affect everyone in the same way.
You might recognize some of these experiences:
- You struggle to trust yourself or others. You second-guess your decisions, question your judgment, or find it difficult to feel emotionally safe in relationships.
- You put other people’s needs before your own. You may fear disappointing others, struggle to say no, or feel guilty when setting boundaries, even when you’re overwhelmed.
- You carry shame, engage in negative self-talk, or feel like you’re never good enough. Past experiences may have left you questioning your worth, criticizing yourself, or believing you’re somehow responsible for what happened to you.
- You find yourself repeating painful relationship patterns. You may tolerate behaviour that hurts you, fear abandonment, become anxious when someone pulls away, or struggle to recognize what a healthy relationship looks like.
- You feel on edge, emotionally overwhelmed, or disconnected. You might overthink, feel constantly alert to other people’s moods, shut down during conflict, or have difficulty identifying and expressing your emotions.
- You know your past wasn’t your fault, but you still feel affected by it. Childhood experiences, historical abuse, or an abusive relationship may continue to influence how you see yourself, respond to others, and navigate everyday life.
You don’t have to experience every one of these struggles for past trauma to be affecting you. Sometimes, the signs of unresolved trauma are difficult to recognize because the ways you learned to cope once helped you get through difficult circumstances.
Sometimes people don’t recognize these experiences as trauma. They simply think: “Why do I keep reacting this way?”
How Trauma Therapy Can Help You Heal and Move Forward
From Trauma and Survival Patterns to Self-Compassion and Healing
Many trauma responses began as attempts to cope and these strategies may have made sense at one point in your life:
You may have learned to stay quiet.
To avoid conflict.
To keep everyone happy.
To stay in control.
To disconnect from your emotions.
To always be prepared.
At Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy, trauma therapy offers a compassionate space to explore how your past experiences may be affecting you today. Working with a trauma-informed therapist allows you to better understand your emotional responses, recognize patterns that developed as ways of coping, and begin to relate to yourself with greater understanding rather than criticism, shame or self-judgement. Whether you’re seeking childhood trauma therapy, PTSD therapy or therapy for complex trauma, Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy can help you rebuild self-esteem, strengthen boundaries, develop self-trust, and create healthier relationships with others.
Depending on your needs, your therapy may focus on:
- Healing from childhood trauma and understanding how early experiences continue to affect your self-worth, emotional well-being, and relationships.
- Working through the effects of abuse and painful relationship experiences, including the impact on your sense of safety, trust, and identity.
- Understanding attachment patterns and recognizing how past experiences may influence how you connect with others, respond to conflict, or navigate closeness and intimacy.
- Reducing negative self-talk and self-blame so you can develop a more compassionate view of yourself and let go of beliefs that leave you feeling unworthy or not good enough.
- Rebuilding self-esteem and self-trust so you can feel more confident in your decisions, recognize your needs, and trust your own judgment.
- Establishing healthy boundaries and feeling more comfortable expressing your needs, saying no, and developing relationships built on mutual respect.
- Recognizing and changing painful patterns that may have helped you cope in the past but are no longer supporting the life or relationships you want.
- Developing ways to manage difficult emotions and responding to triggers with greater understanding, confidence, and a sense of control.
- Creating healthier relationships with yourself and others so you can feel more secure, connected, and comfortable being yourself.
What to Expect When Starting Trauma Therapy
You may want to feel better but worry that talking about the past will mean reliving painful experiences you would rather leave behind. You may recognize signs of unresolved trauma in your relationships, self-esteem, or emotional well-being, but feel unsure how to begin working through them.
Trauma therapy isn’t just about understanding what happened to you. It’s also about helping you change how you experience life today.
At Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy, the process starts with a supportive conversation about your therapy needs, what you would like to change, and what you hope will feel different in your life. As a trauma therapist, Heidi Klett, MSW RSW works with you at your pace, helping you feel heard and supported without pressure to share more than you’re ready to.
1. Book a Free Consultation
During your free consultation, we’ll talk about what you are experiencing, what you would like to feel different, and the support you’re looking for. You don’t need to have the right words or share anything you’re not ready to discuss. We’ll explore whether working together feels like a good fit.
2. Review Your Benefits Coverage
Understanding the cost of therapy should not add to your stress. If you need help understanding your benefits, we can review your coverage options together. As a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, Heidi provides services that are covered by many workplace benefits plans, depending on your individual coverage. Heidi is also an approved provider under the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients.
3. Begin With Your First Session
Your first session is an opportunity to explore how past experiences may be affecting your life today. You may be struggling with negative self-talk, difficulty trusting others, relationship challenges, shame, or feeling constantly on guard.
As a trauma therapist, Heidi will help you explore what you are experiencing without judgment or pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. We’ll begin by understanding what matters most to you and identifying what you need to feel supported. You won’t be expected to revisit painful memories.
4. Work Toward Meaningful Change Together
Ongoing sessions provide space to understand how trauma has shaped your beliefs about yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. Together, we’ll work toward goals that matter to you, whether that’s rebuilding self-esteem and self-trust, strengthening boundaries, managing difficult emotions, or developing healthier relationship patterns.
Your therapy will reflect your experiences, needs, and readiness. We’ll regularly review your progress and adjust our approach as needed. The goal isn’t to erase the past or force you to move on, but to help you feel less controlled by what happened, reconnect with your sense of self, and move toward a life where you feel more confident, secure, and in control of your choices.
